Discovering Meaning in Spelling

During homophone practice, students discover that the <w> in two helps signal meaning "two or double." Other words with an initial <tw> pattern share a historical connection in meaning:

twin
twice
twinkle
twist

Comb also contains a silent letter. The <b> helps preserve the spelling and is needed in related words:

comb + i + ne → combine
comb + i + nate + ion → combination
